SNOW HILL'S GOT SUCH A GOOD BEAT, YOU COULD ALMOST DANCE TO IT

So John Gronki is out as police chief of Snow Hill after not quite two years. It's not like I didn't see that coming from ten miles downrange. ... Right after the town hired him, a good friend of mine sat down and talked to Mike McDermott, then interim chief and a candidate for the job. Mike had the respect of the rank and file and of the citizens. But he didn't get the job because the town was shopping for a Cadallac with a Yugo bank account. That is, they wanted to pay a whole lot less for an administrator than the going rate. And when they found out they couldn't, or wouldn't afford the market rate they decided to go with a candidate with no administrative skills. So they hired Gronki. "It won't last," McDermott reportedly said.... and it didn't. Even a year ago, line officers were saying privately the wished McDermott was back at the helm. Maybe he will be.

Wow! This blog is really changing. I never thought I'd see ratturd openly support a far-right republican fundamentalist for ANYTHING! And now you want him to run law enforcement for your houme town. Hmmmmm. Bet the reverend is shining his jack boots even as I type.

First, you need to read the post again. Nowhere did I express support. Secondly, whatever else can be said about McDermott, he is honest, fair and smart. He knows how to be a cop and an administrator. By the estimation of the rank-and-file cops in this town, he was a good chief. 'Nuf said.

Well Said Mr. Turd.

Mike is an honest, and fair cop, and an EXCELLENT detective.

Woster Mike's religious fervor is not fair game for attack. I suppose his zeal for law enforcement work is fair game, but I don't know why you would attack it.

If you think he is honest then you don't know him very well. Ask the right people and they will tell you things you don't know about his supposed "honesty".

Rat, you certainly do at least appear to be supporting McDermott when you imply that he should have gotten the job over Groncki.

Pay close attention to the following since you obviously don't know much abuot this man:

If it was up to McDermott-
Bush would be getting praised right now for his job as president.
Only far right conservatives would hold public office.
All students would be required to take classes on Christianity in public schools.
The press would never be allowed to print anything negative about a conservative politician.

The list goes on. He is Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Pat Robertson all rolled into a nice, clean police uniform.

He couldn't care less about anyone's rights except those who agree with him. In fact, he would label you the devil based on what you post here, and the devil deserves no rights.

Have you never read any of his letters to the editors? He's very open about his ultra right wing opinions.

yes, I've read his letters, I know about his politics and his religious fervor.
But I also know that I dealt with him on several ocassions when I was a reporter and he was over at WCBI, and he always dealt with me honestly. Everything he told me I was able to independantly confirm through other sources (and vice-versa) and when he didn't want to answer a question he would tell me, straight-up, that he wasn't going to answer it. He didn't dick around and lie to me or misdirect me. That's honest enough for me. He also got his dick slammed in a door by higher-ups for releasing public information to a reporter in the Hale Harrison investigation. And he's honest enough so that when he tells me he didn't do it, I believe him.

By you own words you are proving he is dishonest. Leaking information during an ongoing investigation is a violation of his job and is therefore dishonest. Ongoing investigations cannot be compromised by one officer who has a score to settle.

One thing is for sure: whatever he leaked was designed to support his own agenda.

If you believe otherwise then you are quite naive.

truthiness said...

A good reporter would have known that McDermott HATES Hale Harrison and would have said anything to make him look guily, whether it was true or not.

McDermott has no problem lying about people who he thinks don't live up to his own moral standards. In his mind it is doing God's work to lie to get one of Satan's followers in trouble.

Again, you are very naive to believe otherwise.

This just in: Deputy (formerly Capt of the OCPD) Eugene Parker has been sworn in as interim chief in Snow Hill. Now this is a TRUE police professional.

McDermott honest?! Only when it suits his agenda.

Mr. Turd

I have had to work with Mike in an adversarial relationship, and even when it was against his own interests, he told it like it was.

As a Mayor of Pocomoke, he certainly seems to have the interest of the people at heart. I have not heard of him making morning prayer mandatory for city employees. As far as I know he has not turned City Hall into a shrine to Jesus Christ.

Who cares what he thinks about George Bush? How does that effect his ability to be a good police officer? Yes I know Mr. Turd is of a different political bent than the Mayor, but at least Mr. Turd recognizes and values honesty and hard work. It should be of no interest to us as to wheter or not a Chief of Police is a "Liberal" or a "Conservative".

Gene Parker is an honest cop and a good man with no personal agenda or scores to settle. Snow Hill is lucky to have him.

Hopefully this means that the Reverand Mayor Deputy McDermott is out of the running.

I don't care what a police chief's political or religious persuasion is. However, McDermott is a religous ZEALOT, and like all religous zealots believes everything he does is dicated by the will of God.

Anyone who has more than a casual relationship with him knows this and he makes no secret of it.

Yes, he can be very charming and likeable, I've seen it myself. But make no mistake, he's two faced and dishonest but feels justified because he believes he is part of God's army.

Scary indeed.

Listen, I know McDermott is a stanch Republican. And I know that he has strong Christian beliefs. But I don't give a rat's ass about that because he doesn't try to inflict his beliefs upon me.... That's the key here, guys.... I think the Repiglican party is only about enriching its members, and only plays the Christian card as a way to attract poor, ignorant members who will cast their votes for those candidates who say they support the idea of The Theocratic States of America.
In point of fact, few if any of those politicians do support such an idea, and the ones who do, get marginalized in the political arena because they are nutcases who were lucky enough to be elected by ignorant and gullible voters.
But this does not mean that everyone who attends church regularly, or professes a belief in a god, is defective. To my mind it is only those people, of whatever political, religious, sexual, or social stripe, who think that their beliefs should be inflicted upon everyone though codification who are anti-American and so are defective.... And that goes for the left as well as the right. ... If you think abortion or homosexuality are sins, then don't get an abortion and don't be a homosexual. By the same token, if you are appalled by the numbers of handgun homicides in this country, then control your impulses, control your children and most of all, control access to your firearms.
And while you're assuming all these responsibilities for yourself and your beliefs, please keep in mind that this nation has adopted certain tenets that serve as the underpinnings of this form of government. Among them are that all of us are equal in the eyes of the law- without regard to political, social, religious or sexual orientation. ... If you want to retain your rights and privileges, then you absolutely have to afford them to everyone else. ... You don't want to do that, move to another country.

Well Ratturd, You freaking astound me. You must be the other closet libertarian I keep hearing about. I've known Mike better than 15 years. When I first met him he was preaching at the Sunspot in Ocean City. I didn't know he was in law enforcement until some time had passed. Can't say I was suprised, after all he did look the part. I've never seen Mike impose his beliefs on others. He may write letters to the newspapers, and sure he has a wish list, and a belief-driven agenda, doesn't everyone. I also know Mike has his detractors, apparently I've been reading some of their gripes. I'm not gonna try and change your minds on Mike, and I don't think Mike will either. But Ratturd you are right that he is an honest guy. I'm sure everyone here has met and had a bellyfull of cops who never take off that badge, the self-righteous ones that sleep standing up at attention in the closet so as not to wrinkle that uniform. Mike is not one of them. Take another look.

Well said Mr. Turd and Mr/Ms Wit

The shrill and churlish unsubstantiated cries of Indrid Cold, are a slander to all those who are devout and faithful to their religion.

Cold's accusations and postulations would leave one to believe that a Roman Catholic person should never be considered for the Supreme Court.

Indrid, how does Mike's alleged zealousness, effect his ability to be a good police officer? If he is such a zealot, is it not contradictory to call him a liar?

Your attacks on Mike seem to be personal, rather than philosophical.

Rat, you claim to be a former jouralist, if you did some research you'd find plenty of people who agree with my assessment of McDermott's character.

By your own statement you confirm that he leaked information to reporters during an ongoing criminal investigation, got caught and was reprimanded for it.

Do any of you defending McDermott's character think that is acceptable?

I never said I have a problem with anyone who is devoutly religious. However, I do have a problem with McDermott because he absolutely does let religous beliefs effect how he does his job.

Hadley, it's not personal or philosophical. It's just the truth.

Cold:
I never said he leaked information to me or anyone else. Please learn to read.
I did say he was accused to releasing PUBLIC information to a reporter (Daniel Valentine) relative to the Hale Harrison investigation. He said he didn't release the report to Valentine, and I said I believed him. What I didn't tell you was that I believed him because I already knew that WCBI rejected the request for the report and Valentine then went to the State Police investigator and got the report from him.
Finally, If you know McDermott like you claim to, you know that he's man enough to stand behind his actions... I've never known him to lie about something he's alleged to have said or done, and that reputation, to my mind, would make it difficult to impeach his word in a court of law.
You don't have to like him, or agree with him, but he does command a kind of respect.
