We were mostly asleep when we staggered down the stairs at 5:30 this morning and flipped on the Tv to catch the news out of the center of the universe. So we forgot that the Hee Haw network had hijacked channel 5 out of DC and replaced their own programming. So what did we find? Ag Day, a syndicated show for and about farmers. And we can't deny the show has value-- particulary if you raise chickens and cows and grain and such. But how big is that audience compared to those of us who are not farmers? But we left it on, thinking perhaps they might air a news program at the top of the hour.....Nope. From 6 a.m. until we were able to quell our dry-heaves long enough to turn off the TV at 8:30 it was infomercials. Now there's a public service for you.
Presumably, the station's owners made this switch to capture a larger market share by locking out the DC station. If so, they failed in a spectacular fashion. What's next? Reruns of Hee Haw, Green Acres, Lassie, Petticoat Junction and Beverly Hillbillies?

Concerned Citizen,
Before I begin I'd like to introduce myself to those of you who don't know me. I'm 60, married, a 30 year resident of our county, a member of a local church, owner of a petroleum distribution company, a former faculty member of Wilmington College, a life long Republican, a 2 term member of the Ocean City Council, a former member and chairman of the Worcester County Planning and Zoning Commission and a voter in the election district which includes Ocean Pines and Bishopville.
I am taking the unusual step of writing to you because I am deeply troubled about the candidacy of the incumbent Worcester County Commissioner Thomas Cetola. Additionally, our local print media tend to be heavily influenced by their advertisers which in many cases are real estate companies and or developers and therefore can't be relied
upon to deliver unbiased political coverage.
As some of you know, I actively supported Cetola in his first race for County Commissioner 4 years ago primarily because he promised he would protect our community from overdevelopment and would see to it that a service road in front of the commercial development (Wal-Mart and Home Depot) on Rt. 50 would be constructed. Obviously, his promises haven't been kept. Consequently, I believe the only true measure of an incumbent is his record.
Therefore, I submit the following for your consideration. Cetola's "accomplishments" are as follows:
1. Cetola supported the rezoning of Rt. 113 from Rt. 589 North to the Delaware line from agriculture and light industrial to industrial and commercial. Only a huge public outcry prevented this vital entrance to both Ocean Pines and Ocean City from being clogged with commercial development like we see on Rt. 50 and now across from the South Gate in Ocean Pines.
2. When the commissioners were considering the expansion of the Qcean Pines sewer system to provide additional areas outside of Ocean Pines with sewage, Cetola ramrodded through the expansion project and eliminated the non-binding referendum in which the folks of Ocean Pines could have at least had some input before the County Commissioners made their decision.
3. Despite overwhelming opposition from both the neighbors on Shingle Landing Road and the Planning
Commission, Cetola forced the rezoning of the parcel on Rt. 113 and Shingle Landing Road currently
being used as nursery/plant store. At Cetola's behest the zoning was changed from agriculture to general business ostensibly because the owner wanted to serve "sandwiches". This seemingly innocuous change will with certainty result in the folks on Shingle Landing Road eventually being forced to deal with a McDonald's or a convenience store/gas station etc., at the only entrance to their community.
4. Despite a unanimous recommendation from the Planning and Zoning Commission, Cetola rejected mandatory architectural controls on the Rt. 113 corridor. Instead, we as a community are left with no way for our Planning Commission to effectively contro.1 what the development of Rt. 113 is going to look like. No doubt, the highway will eventually be lined with the very same commercial slock we see today on Rt. 50 in West Ocean City.
5. To the horror of his own constituents and despite at times near gridlock conditions on Rt. 589, Cetola has "nurtured" the continuing development all along the Rt. 589 corridor never once calling for a slow down in development that would have allowed the county and the state highway department time to catch up with the additional development pressure.
6. Recently he cast the deciding vote against impact fees. As a result, the young children at Showell Elementary School will continue to attend classes in eight trailers in part because Cetola has continually fought against impact fees on new development that would have funded a capital improvement program. Impact fees could have provided the kind of school facility and education that you and I had as children. I suggest you drive up to this elementary school, go around back where the trailers are hidden and see for yourself.

7. Cetola recently attempted to convince the rest of the Commissioners on the benefits of dumping sewage
effluent into the St. Martins River (the river that flows in front of Ocean Pines). He rather lamely agreed with
the developer that the developer's hand picked (and compensated by the developer) consultant be used to advise the County Commissioners on the Showell sewer system. Is there any doubt about what that advice would have been? Surely, Cetola knows (or should know) the St. Martin River is one of the most severely polluted rivers in our state. Does he really think the rest of us are so stupid to believe that 1,000,000 gallons per day of sewage effluent would improve the river's quality?-
With the above in mind, I attended a candidate's forum the other night during which Cetola admitted (arrogantly I might add) that he has accepted a $4,000.00 campaign contribution from the developer of the planned 2,200 unit project outside of Snow Hill. Worse, I went on the State of Maryland website and found three more contributions from organizations either owned or controlled by Allan Cohen (the developer involved in the 4,000 unit Showell project) and find Cetola has accepted another $4,000.00. As you can see from the attached document from the State of Maryland, the developer and real estate money continue to roll in as we get closer to the date of the election. Unless people like you and me put our foot down the developers will own another County Commissioner. (see enclosed)

That brings me to the bottom line. In my judgment, should Cetola be re-elected he will happily preside over
the over commercialization, the over development of our county and the destruction of the quality of our
environment. I urge you to join with me, reject Cetola and his big money sponsors and turn him out of office on primary day September 12th.
The alternative is a woman who has long worked in our community, a retired police department detective (the last 10 years in "Internal Affairs") from Baltimore County of unimpeachable personal integrity, a woman who has reached the point in life where she owes no allegiance to anyone and one we can count on to vote her own convictions on each and every issue every time. That person is Linda Busick and I ask that you join with me and fight
for our county and our way of life and vote for Linda on primary election day, September 12, 2006.

What's interesting about comment 4....not only does he have a gas station/wine store that he considers "slock", but he was ON the planning and zoning board when this so called "slock" was allowed to be built. Did he forget that part?
As for Busick...she and her husband are intimidating everyone in the Pines to put up her lawn signs. That's not how you get votes IMHO.

We've met Ed Ellis and know him well enough to know that there is more behind his letter than he's telling us. Several years ago, he tried to get a reporter at the Dispatch to do a story about apparent loan fraud on the part of Hale Harrison in getting a loan to expand one of his hotels. Reportedly, Ellis provided a document that purported to be typewritten noted compiled by Harrison's lawyer indicating a fraudulent application had been filed. The reporter declined to do the story citing possible legal liability to himself and the paper if it published what was or appeared to be covered by lawyer/client priviledge. Later other sources indicated Ellis was attempting to get revenge on Harrison for some back-room agreement that went south. given that information, albeit second-hand, we have to wonder if Ellis is trying to get revenge here too. Ellis, we think, is not about community service. We think he's about self-service.
